With wonder, surprise, and excitement, I walk through a space. As I start to draw and paint there, I feel quiet and alone. What interests me most is not just the space or an object, but something else. Through the space and the object, I feel their human qualities and expressions, perhaps of those that people have left behind. These feelings are nearly religious in their quality, the feeling of life in the space and objects. I like spaces and objects having their own history that I don’t know. I am just a brief visitor when they and I encounter each other. Through the common space where our paths cross, I could get a glimpse into their lives and their past. Also, in that moment, I leave an impression there where many others have left theirs. It is not just documenting the reality in a servile way. It is like a working on a portrait by interpreting space, object and light, and submitting it to my perception of their human qualities and impressions. This all started with my realization about spaces and objects and their interaction with life. In revealing the space and objects through my work, I can come to know the people who encountered that space and objects: my work is an interpretation of their history and memory.
